I used to think that the best way to learn was to self-learn everything online.

Yes, you can self-learn everything on YouTube/other sources. Given that you put in the time to search, compile, practice and apply the stuff that you learnt online.

BUT. Is this truly the most time-efficient way to learn things? I don’t think so. I currently believe that the most time-efficient way to learn a skill is to spend some money, and hire someone qualified to teach you.

The problem with self-learning everything online

Can almost all learnable information be found online? Yes.

Can you learn from these sources to master whatever skill you want? Yes.

Can you learn it fast and efficiently? Possible.

Is this the fastest way to learn? Probably not.

As someone who has tried to learn a bunch of skills purely from free online sources before, here are some problems with this approach.

  • Different online instructors may teach slightly different things
  • A source could be missing some info, which you need to find elsewhere
